Going through a separation or divorce when you have kids could be very difficult. If you had misunderstandings and arguments with your spouse it could create a toxic environment for the kids as well. Talk to Your Kids

It is always advisable to talk to your kids even though you are not going through a divorce. Especially teenagers tend to be rebellious and communication is the one way to keep them engaged and possibly, away from trouble. Research has shown that during most times, kids feel that it is their fault that their parents are separating.

Hence it is important that you talk to them and make them understand that it is not their fault. Remember also to listen to their concerns and try to provide any solutions if you could. Perhaps one of the children could be moving away with you. That could be difficult if you don’t talk to them prior and make them understand it is a must during a situation like this and that both of you together will have to try and make the best out of it.

Maintain Routines

Kids are usually familiar with a certain routine and if it is going haywire, they might get even more difficult to handle. Especially the daily routine of going to school, getting their homework done, going out to play and all that should be adhered to as much as possible. Meanwhile, after a discussion with them you can also try to introduce new aspects to it such as taking the bus rather than carpooling or getting dropped by you or your spouse.

It could also be a good idea to talk to his or her class teacher and make them aware of what is going on. Consistency in Rules and Regulations

Even though your kids might be separated after this, and one might live with you while the other with your partner, it must not interfere with their normal schedules. Especially school work, extracurricular activities they were engaged in, bedtimes and curfews etc. should be strictly adhered to.

When making every decision and going through any punishment, it is important that you talk to your partner and make sure everyone is treated the same way. One of the most important things, is not to involve your children in the conflict between you and your partner.
